Musk's X: A New Era of Political Engagement in the Digital Age

Created: JANUARY 20, 2025

Elon Musk's acquisition of X (formerly Twitter) has significantly altered the landscape of political discourse online. While former President Trump revolutionized digital presidential communication during his first term, Musk's approach caters to a generation constantly connected, shaping a new dynamic for Trump's second term.

Trump utilizes Truth Social much like he used Twitter, issuing pronouncements and reacting to news. His Truth Social feed reflects his immediate thoughts, resonating with a devoted base of supporters. In contrast, Musk's X account resembles a public forum, where he engages with users on government initiatives, confirms or debunks reports, and even conducts polls on policy decisions.

Elon Musk, owner of X, has a substantial following on the platform.

Musk's immense following allows him to disseminate information rapidly and directly address concerns, often bypassing traditional media. He has used the platform to clarify the Department of Government Efficiency's (DOGE) investigations into USAID and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, responding to circulating misinformation. He also uses polls to gauge public opinion on matters such as auditing the IRS and personnel decisions within DOGE.

This direct engagement has drawn criticism from some Democratic leaders, including Representatives Ayanna Pressley and Jasmine Crockett, who have publicly denounced Musk's actions. Senator Chuck Schumer has also expressed concerns about DOGE's impact. In response, the official DOGE X account provides a more formal channel for disseminating information and verifying Musk's statements.

Musk's substantial X following surpasses the combined followers of Trump on Truth Social and X. While Trump primarily uses Truth Social for initial announcements, later disseminating them through press releases, Musk uses X as his primary communication platform. This difference in approach highlights the evolving relationship between political figures and social media.

A recent point of contention arose when Musk publicly questioned the funding for The Stargate Project's AI investment, contradicting a recent announcement by Trump. Trump later downplayed the disagreement, attributing it to Musk's personal differences with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

While Trump has returned to X after being reinstated, he primarily shares screenshots of his Truth Social posts, indicating a preference for his own platform. Musk's ownership of X has shifted the platform's political leanings, with Republicans viewing it more favorably than Democrats, according to a Pew Research Center survey.
