Private Security in High Demand as LA's Wealthy Seek Protection After Wildfires

Created: JANUARY 20, 2025

In the wake of the devastating Los Angeles wildfires, affluent residents are increasingly turning to private security firms for protection against looters and scammers. Companies like MPS Security are experiencing a surge in demand as homeowners seek to safeguard their properties and remaining possessions.

MPS Security's Executive Protection Manager, Matthew Crider, spoke with Fox News Digital about the unique challenges posed by the fires. Initially, access to affected areas was restricted to security companies, creating a barrier for those who couldn't afford private patrols. Crider's team often found themselves checking on neighbors' homes at the request of their clients, offering a lifeline to those uncertain about the fate of their properties. They documented the damage with photos, providing much-needed information, though often delivering heartbreaking news of destruction.

One unusual request that arose was for protection of the debris itself. Crider explained that wealthy individuals wanted to ensure that even the remnants of their belongings weren't stolen. Many clients also had fireproof safes containing valuable items, adding another layer to the security concerns.

The increased demand for private security reflects a desire for peace of mind in a vulnerable time. With limited police resources, private security offers an additional layer of protection, allowing residents to feel more secure. Crider noted the community spirit emerging, with neighbors pooling resources to hire security personnel together.

Beyond physical security, Crider highlighted other emerging threats, such as disaster relief fraud and scams. He mentioned cases of individuals falsely claiming residency to collect FEMA aid, illustrating the diverse range of criminal activity that can follow a disaster.

Covered Six is another company seeing increased demand. They've deployed a special response team to assist communities affected by the wildfires, offering support and security services. The company emphasizes its ability to provide nimble and flexible solutions in times of crisis.

In response to the rising crime, the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department has also stepped up its efforts. They've established a "Looter Suppression Team" with specialized personnel and increased patrols, including aerial surveillance. These measures aim to provide a visible law enforcement presence and deter criminal activity in the vulnerable areas.
