Professional cyclist Gino Mäder tragically passed away on Friday at the age of 26, succumbing to injuries sustained in a devastating crash during stage 5 of the Tour de Suisse. Mäder, riding for Team Bahrain Victorious, fell into a ravine after a high-speed crash on a steep downhill turn on Thursday.

Bahrain Victorious confirmed Mäder's death in a heartfelt statement, describing him as an exceptional athlete, a determined competitor, and a valued member of their team and the cycling community. They praised his talent, dedication, and the inspiration he provided to everyone around him.

According to the team's statement, Mäder was resuscitated at the scene before being airlifted to a hospital, where he tragically passed away the next morning. Reports indicate that his fall was approximately 30 meters (almost 100 feet) and was stopped by a stream at the bottom of the ravine.

Milan Erzen, Managing Director of Bahrain Victorious, expressed his devastation at the loss of Mäder, highlighting not only his cycling prowess but also his exceptional character. The team plans to race in Mäder's honor, carrying his memory with them.

The sixth stage of the eight-day race was initially delayed following the announcement of Mäder's death and then ultimately canceled. The peloton rode together for the final 30 kilometers (18 miles) of the planned route as a tribute to their fallen colleague. The race is expected to resume on Saturday.
