After enduring a 10-month detainment in Russia and missing the entire 2022 WNBA season, Brittney Griner's return to the Phoenix Mercury in February was met with anticipation and uncertainty. She's currently averaging an impressive 19.5 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game.

Griner herself admitted surprise at her performance level. "I just wanted to get back on the court and avoid injury, giving my all," she stated. "I was honestly a little shocked at how well I played once I got out there. I'm thrilled with my progress."

Griner acknowledged the challenging journey back to peak physical condition. "It was a difficult path, with countless hours spent in the gym and weight room to regain my form," she explained. Her dedication and perseverance have clearly paid off.

Griner's arrest on drug charges in February 2022 near Moscow and subsequent release in December after a prisoner exchange captivated the world. During her detainment, the WNBA honored her with tributes, including displaying her initials and jersey number on every court and naming her an honorary All-Star starter last year.

This year, Griner will play for Team Stewart in the All-Star Game at Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas. Team captain Breanna Stewart expressed admiration for Griner's resilience. Despite this setback, Griner remains focused on the All-Star game and is deeply grateful for the opportunity to play.

Looking ahead, Griner has expressed interest in participating in the new "Unrivaled" three-on-three and one-on-one league designed to provide additional income opportunities for WNBA players.
