ESPN broadcaster Sean McDonough, set to call the 4 Nations Face-Off championship game, has appealed to American hockey fans to show respect for the Canadian national anthem. This comes after Canadian fans booed the American anthem during earlier tournament matches, including the U.S. team's 3-1 victory on Sunday.

Speaking on WEEI, McDonough expressed his hope that the home crowd in Boston would energize Team USA in the final against Canada. However, he also emphasized the importance of respecting the Canadian anthem, stating, "Let's be better than that."

McDonough acknowledged the recent political tensions between the two countries, including discussions of tariffs and President Trump's remarks about Canada becoming the 51st state. He noted that these tensions seemed to have spilled over into the sporting arena, with the booing of anthems becoming a recent phenomenon. He urged American fans to rise above the political fray and demonstrate respect for their neighbors to the north.

McDonough's call for sportsmanship echoes a broader sentiment of keeping political disputes separate from athletic competition. He encouraged fans to enthusiastically support their own team while maintaining respect for their opponents and their national symbols.

The possibility of President Trump attending the final has added another layer of intrigue to the event. Team USA general manager Bill Guerin expressed his support for a presidential visit, stating on "America’s Newsroom" that the team would be honored to have the president in attendance.
