Following a diagnosis of pneumonia affecting both lungs, Pope Francis is reported to be in good spirits and recovering well at Rome's Gemelli hospital. Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni confirmed that the pontiff enjoyed a restful night, woke up refreshed, and ate breakfast on Wednesday. This marks his fifth night in the hospital.

The 88-year-old Pope was admitted to the hospital last Friday due to worsening bronchitis. Earlier this week, medical professionals determined he was battling a polymicrobial respiratory tract infection, a condition involving a combination of viruses, bacteria, and possibly other microorganisms. The Vatican revealed on Tuesday that the infection, coupled with pre-existing bronchiectasis and asthmatic bronchitis, has created a more complex treatment scenario. A CT scan revealed the bilateral pneumonia, necessitating further medication.

While the Vatican hasn't specified the Pope's discharge date, they have indicated he will remain hospitalized for an appropriate duration, given the complexity of his condition. Despite the health challenges, reports suggest Pope Francis has remained active, reading newspapers, working from his hospital room, and maintaining a positive outlook, expressing gratitude for the prayers offered for his recovery. He is not believed to be requiring supplemental oxygen.

Medical experts, such as Rome-based infectious disease specialist Carmelo D’Asero, have noted that the Pope's lack of high fever might be a cause for some concern, potentially indicating a weakened immune response. However, the Vatican continues to provide updates on his progress.
