Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin is encouraging members of the incoming Trump administration to make the Commonwealth their new home. In a video advertisement released Tuesday, Youngkin highlights Virginia's advantages over neighboring Washington, D.C., and Maryland, emphasizing the state's strong education system, safe communities, and lower taxes.
The governor's invitation comes on the heels of CNBC's ranking of Virginia as the top state for business and education in the U.S. Youngkin's ad showcases various scenes across Virginia, from Richmond to Alexandria, portraying the state as an ideal location for families and professionals. He also touted the recent bipartisan effort that secured $2.5 billion in new K-12 funding and teacher raises.
A Trump transition team spokesman praised Youngkin's leadership, suggesting that the governor's accomplishments in creating a business-friendly environment and improving quality of life make Virginia an attractive option for those seeking to relocate. Youngkin's focus on education, which he has previously referred to as "the bedrock of attaining the American dream," is also a key selling point in his pitch.
Youngkin's victory in the 2021 gubernatorial election marked a significant shift in Virginia politics after a decade of Democratic control. With Virginia's unique law prohibiting governors from serving consecutive terms, Lieutenant Governor Winsome Sears has already launched her campaign for the 2025 gubernatorial race, aiming to continue the current administration's policies. She will likely face Democratic Representative Abigail Spanberger, who vacated her congressional seat to pursue the governorship. Spanberger's seat will be filled by Yevgeny "Eugene" Vindman, twin brother of former Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, a key figure in the first Trump impeachment inquiry.
