Haley Challenges AOC's Stance on Israel, Sparking Heated Exchange

Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

Former South Carolina Governor and presidential candidate Nikki Haley engaged in a sharp exchange with Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez following AOC's criticism of Israel. The disagreement began when Haley called out several House members, including AOC, for voting against a resolution supporting Israel. AOC responded by defending her vote and reiterating her stance that Israel is an "apartheid state." Haley questioned AOC's focus on Israel, contrasting it with her perceived lack of attention to human rights violations in countries like China, Iran, Cuba, and Venezuela. Haley also suggested that AOC and other members of "the Squad" share common ground with antisemitic voices at the United Nations.

AOC retorted with sarcasm, suggesting alternative titles for the list of representatives who voted against the resolution, such as "People in Congress who think apartheid is wrong." She was one of nine representatives who opposed the measure, which ultimately passed with overwhelming support (412-9). Other representatives who voted against the resolution included Jamaal Bowman (D-NY), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Summer Lee (D-PA), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), Cori Bush (D-MO), Andre Carson (D-IN), and Delia Ramirez (D-IL). Representative Betty McCollum (D-MN) voted "present."

This public clash occurred just a day after Israeli President Isaac Herzog addressed a joint session of Congress, an event AOC boycotted. During his speech, Herzog seemed to indirectly address criticism from AOC and "the Squad," emphasizing that while he respects criticism, especially from friends, it shouldn't negate Israel's right to exist. His remarks received strong applause from those present.
