Weiss Report Scrutinized: Comer, Whistleblowers Question Completeness After Biden Pardon

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

Following the release of Special Counsel David Weiss's report on the Hunter Biden investigation, House Oversight Chairman James Comer criticized the report as "incomplete" due to President Biden's pardon of his son. Comer argued that the pardon shielded Hunter Biden from accountability for alleged international influence peddling facilitated by his father. He also highlighted the testimony of IRS whistleblowers who claimed they were obstructed from pursuing evidence potentially implicating President Biden.

The report details Weiss's six-year investigation into Hunter Biden's taxes and firearm purchase during his struggle with drug addiction. Hunter Biden was found guilty on three felony firearm charges and pleaded guilty to failing to pay over $1.4 million in taxes. Despite previous assurances, President Biden ultimately pardoned his son for any offenses committed between 2014 and 2024.

Comer's statement referenced IRS whistleblowers Gary Shapley and Joseph Ziegler, who alleged they were prevented from fully investigating the case. They expressed concerns about the report's unanswered questions and criticized the lack of consequences for those involved in the alleged misconduct. Shapley and Ziegler, represented by Empower Oversight, questioned why they were the only ones facing repercussions.

Weiss's report also addressed President Biden's characterization of the Hunter Biden prosecutions as "selective" and "unfair," labeling the statement as "gratuitous and wrong." Weiss argued that such statements undermine public trust in the justice system. The report emphasized that Hunter Biden's drug use did not excuse his failure to pay taxes on millions of dollars earned through his family connections.

Weiss detailed Hunter Biden's income and spending habits, highlighting his "extravagant lifestyle" despite owing substantial taxes. He stressed the deliberate nature of Hunter Biden's tax violations, stating they were neither "inconsequential" nor "technical." Hunter Biden's attorney, Abbe Lowell, responded to the report, criticizing Weiss for omitting key details and pursuing "debunked" conspiracies that prolonged the investigation and wasted taxpayer money.
