Imran Khan's Imprisonment Sparks Comparisons to Trump, Supporters Decry 'Witch Hunt'

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

Following his recent imprisonment on corruption charges, former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan's supporters are drawing parallels between his legal battles and those faced by former U.S. President Donald Trump. They allege a politically motivated persecution campaign against the former cricket star, echoing similar claims made by Trump's supporters. Richard Grenell, a former Trump advisor, has also voiced his support for Khan, tweeting "Free Imran Khan!"

A Pakistani court handed down a 14-year sentence to Khan and a 7-year sentence to his wife, Bushra Bibi, after finding them guilty of corruption related to land dealings through the Al-Qadir Trust. Khan maintains his innocence, characterizing the charges as a "witch hunt." This case is just one of over a hundred legal challenges he currently faces.

Pakistan's Information Minister, Ata Ullah TararIn, defended the conviction, citing "irrefutable evidence" of a "mega scam" involving the misuse of official power for personal gain. He emphasized the severity of the alleged corruption and the strength of the evidence against Khan and his wife.

Khan, communicating through his spokespeople, denies the charges and contends that his arrest and sentencing are designed to prevent his political comeback. He acknowledged the similarities between his situation and Trump's, expressing hope that Trump's leadership can contribute to global peace, democracy, and human rights.

Beyond their legal troubles, Khan and Trump share other parallels. Both leaders championed populist movements, with Khan's "Naya Pakistan" (New Pakistan) vision mirroring Trump's "Make America Great Again" slogan. Both also sought to connect with the average citizen, challenging traditional political elites. Khan emphasized the inclusive nature of his political party, the PTI, stating that it represents a diverse cross-section of Pakistani society.

Speculation is rife in Pakistan regarding the potential impact of Trump's return to the U.S. presidency on Khan's situation, given their previously friendly relationship. Grenell has suggested a connection between Trump's victory and potential support for Khan's release. Khan congratulated Trump on his election win, and both leaders have prioritized economic issues in their respective political agendas.
