US Embassy Urges Americans to Leave Syria Amidst Post-Assad Instability

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Following the recent overthrow of Syrian President Bashar Assad and subsequent unrest, the U.S. Embassy in Syria is strongly advising all American citizens to evacuate the country immediately. Those unable to leave are instructed to prepare for extended periods of sheltering in place, given the volatile and unpredictable security situation marked by ongoing armed conflict and terrorism.

The embassy, which suspended operations in 2012, emphasized that it cannot provide regular or emergency consular services. It directs U.S. citizens needing emergency assistance for departure to contact the U.S. Embassy in their intended destination country. Americans remaining in Syria are urged to stay informed about evolving security conditions, keep their mobile devices charged, and incorporate the latest information into their plans.

The State Department advises against all travel to Syria due to the significant risks of terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, and armed conflict. This warning comes as the country grapples with the aftermath of Assad's downfall and his subsequent flight to Russia. In a recent statement, Assad maintained he acted as a "custodian of a national project," driven by the Syrian people's faith in his vision, and held a steadfast belief in their capacity to safeguard the state and its institutions.
