GOP Secretaries of State Demand Blinken's Resignation Over Alleged Role in Hunter Biden Laptop Letter

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

Several Republican Secretaries of State are calling for Antony Blinken's resignation if investigations confirm his involvement in a letter discrediting the Hunter Biden laptop story. They allege that Blinken, then a senior Biden campaign advisor, played a key role in orchestrating the letter signed by 51 former intelligence officials, which dismissed the laptop story as Russian disinformation weeks before the 2020 election.

The Secretaries of State argue that such actions undermine public trust in elections and demand a thorough Congressional investigation. They contend that if Blinken's involvement is verified, he should immediately step down from his position as Secretary of State.

This call for resignation follows an April report by the House Judiciary and Intelligence Committees, which concluded that former intelligence officials and the Biden campaign collaborated to influence the 2020 election through disinformation. The letter, signed by prominent figures like former CIA Director John Brennan and former DNI James Clapper, claimed the laptop story bore the hallmarks of Russian interference.

The Secretaries of State, including officials from Arkansas, Louisiana, Ohio, Missouri, West Virginia, and Wyoming, have formally addressed their concerns to Congress. They emphasize the need for transparency and accountability to restore public faith in elections. They urge Congress to utilize the full force of the government to ensure future elections remain free and fair, and to hold those responsible for disseminating disinformation accountable.

Blinken has denied any involvement in the letter's creation, stating it wasn't his idea and he neither requested nor solicited it. However, the House committees identified him as the driving force behind the statement. During the final 2020 presidential debate, then-candidate Joe Biden cited the letter to counter accusations made by Donald Trump. At the time, both the Director of National Intelligence and the FBI contradicted the claim of Russian involvement.
