Twitch Streamer Hasan Piker Apologizes for 'Kill Rick Scott' Remark After Suspension

Created: JANUARY 05, 2025

Following a temporary suspension from the live-streaming platform Twitch, left-leaning political commentator Hasan Piker has issued an apology for remarks made during a recent broadcast. Piker's controversial statement, urging Republicans to "kill" Senator Rick Scott, a Florida Republican, was made in response to House Speaker Mike Johnson's discussion of potential spending cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Piker argued that the focus should be on fraudulent providers rather than program recipients, and specifically called out Sen. Scott's past involvement with Columbia/HCA, a healthcare company fined over $1.7 billion for Medicare billing irregularities during Scott's tenure as CEO.

While Twitch has not officially disclosed the reason for Piker's suspension, the timing strongly suggests a connection to his comments about Sen. Scott. This marks Piker's fifth suspension from the platform. In a social media post, Piker expressed remorse, stating, "I'm sorry! I'll choose my words carefully next time." He then rephrased his criticism of Sen. Scott, advocating for "MAX PUNISHMENT" due to the Senator's past involvement in Medicare fraud. He also addressed his detractors, specifically those critical of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and immigration policies.

Piker, known for his substantial following on Twitch, has previously garnered attention for raising over $1 million in Palestinian aid and for engaging with prominent Democratic figures such as Sen. Ed Markey and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. His influence was also acknowledged by Kamala Harris' former deputy campaign manager, Rob Flaherty, who emphasized the need for more voices like Piker's within the political landscape.

However, Piker's online presence has also been marked by controversy. He has faced criticism for downplaying terrorist attacks and making provocative statements, including past remarks about 9/11 and Rep. Dan Crenshaw's war injury, which he later retracted. Recently, he participated in a charity fundraiser alongside the filmmakers of the Oscar-winning documentary "No Other Land."
