Sailor Survives Months Adrift, Craves Sushi Upon Rescue

Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

After surviving for months lost at sea, Australian sailor Timothy Shaddock, 54, and his dog Bella were rescued by a Mexican tuna boat and brought to Manzanillo, Mexico. His first request? Tuna sushi! This humorous request hints at the incredible ordeal Shaddock endured after setting sail from Mexico in April, bound for French Polynesia. Weeks into his journey, a storm crippled his catamaran, leaving him without electronics or a way to cook.

Shaddock and Bella survived by catching raw fish and collecting rainwater. While he didn't detail the hardships they faced, Shaddock emphasized finding inner peace during his solitary time on the ocean.

He spent his days making repairs to his damaged vessel, noting that fatigue was the most challenging aspect of his ordeal. Spotted 1,200 miles offshore, Shaddock described the immense relief he felt when the rescue helicopter appeared and the pilot offered him a drink.

Shaddock praised Bella's bravery throughout their ordeal. He had found her in Mexico and, despite his attempts to find her a home, she persistently followed him back to the sea. He has entrusted Bella's care to a crew member from the fishing vessel, while he plans to return to Australia to reconnect with loved ones. Though he appreciates the solitude he experienced, Shaddock admitted it might be some time before he ventures back onto the open water.
