A hunting mishap in Zachary, Louisiana, has prompted renewed calls for safety from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF). On December 23rd, two hunters, both legally permitted on the same small private property, were involved in an accidental shooting. One hunter mistakenly identified the other as a deer, resulting in the discharge of a 20-gauge shotgun loaded with buckshot.

The shooter immediately contacted emergency services upon realizing the error, and the injured hunter was transported by air to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge. Fortunately, the injuries were reported as non-fatal. The specific location of the victim's wounds was not disclosed by authorities.

An investigation by law enforcement revealed that neither hunter was wearing the legally mandated hunter orange nor carrying deer tags. The shooter received citations for both infractions, and the LDWF has indicated that further charges could be forthcoming as the investigation continues.
