A Californian tourist's video capturing an act of vandalism at Rome's Colosseum has ignited international outrage and renewed calls for stricter penalties against those who deface historical landmarks. The video, which quickly spread across social media, shows a visitor carving "Ivan+Haley 23" into a wall within the ancient amphitheater.

Ryan Lutz, the individual who filmed the incident, expressed his astonishment at witnessing such blatant disrespect for a world-renowned monument. He questioned the vandal, but received only a smile in response. Lutz reported the incident to security personnel, but claims they took no action. Frustrated, he shared the video online, leading to widespread condemnation of the act.

Italian officials were quick to denounce the vandalism. Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano labeled the act as "serious, undignified, and a sign of extreme incivility." Tourism Minister Daniela Santanche echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for tourists to respect Italy's cultural heritage. Both ministers called for the perpetrator to be identified and punished according to Italian law, which could include hefty fines and imprisonment.

This incident is unfortunately not an isolated one. Reports indicate that this is the fourth instance of graffiti at the Colosseum this year alone. Previous cases involving similar acts of vandalism at the Colosseum have resulted in significant fines and even suspended jail sentences. This latest incident underscores the ongoing challenge of protecting historical sites from defacement and highlights the need for increased vigilance and potentially more robust preventative measures.

Lutz, currently on a European backpacking trip, stressed the importance of respecting the cultural heritage of visited countries. While appreciating graffiti as an art form, he characterized the carving of names into historical monuments as a selfish act demonstrating blatant disregard.
