San Francisco's Dolores Park Hill Bomb: Skateboard Event Erupts in Chaos

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

An annual unsanctioned skateboarding event known as the "hill bomb" in San Francisco's Dolores Park descended into chaos over the weekend, resulting in numerous arrests and citations. The event, which involves skateboarders riding down a steep section of Dolores Street at high speeds, typically draws large crowds. This year, however, police presence and preemptive measures escalated tensions before the event even began.

Prior to the skateboarding commencing, police erected barricades, donned riot gear, and issued dispersal orders to the assembled crowd. Videos circulating on social media depict clashes between skateboarders and police, with some individuals throwing bottles and fireworks at officers. Reports also indicate vandalism of nearby properties, including graffiti on Muni light rail trains.

Authorities arrested 32 adults for inciting a riot and issued citations to 81 juveniles. Protesters, including Kevin Ortiz of the SF Latinx Democratic Club, condemned the police response as "immoral" and demanded accountability.

The San Francisco Police Department, referencing past incidents of injuries and even a fatality associated with the "hill bomb," defended its actions. A department press release highlighted previous instances where participants took over streets and caused property damage. Police maintain that they intervened only after the event turned violent, citing reports of vandalism and gunshots that caused concern among local residents. Police Chief Bill Scott emphasized the dangerous and unlawful nature of the behavior and commended officers for holding those responsible accountable. He also expressed relief that no serious injuries occurred.
