Hungarian Foreign Minister Backs Trump's Unconventional Middle East Approach

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

Former President Donald Trump's recent suggestion regarding the Gaza Strip has sparked considerable debate worldwide, including within his own political circles. However, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó cautions against hasty dismissal of the proposal, drawing parallels to the initially controversial yet ultimately successful Abraham Accords.

In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital at the UN headquarters in New York, Szijjártó highlighted the unexpected success of the Abraham Accords, which normalized relations between Israel and several Arab nations. He argued that Trump's innovative approach, though often met with skepticism, can yield significant positive outcomes. “I would like to remind everyone that when President Trump announced his plan regarding the Abraham Accords, there was hardly anyone in the world who would have believed in the success in those agreements,” Szijjártó stated. He emphasized the transformative impact of the Accords on Middle Eastern dynamics, suggesting a similar potential for Trump's Gaza proposal.

Szijjártó acknowledged the complexity of achieving lasting peace in the Middle East but expressed confidence in Trump's ability to navigate these challenges. He refused to “exclude anything” when it comes to the former president’s potential impact on the region.

Trump’s proposal, unveiled during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, involves the United States taking control of the Gaza Strip to facilitate rebuilding and economic development. The former president envisions a comprehensive overhaul of the area, addressing unexploded ordnance, damaged infrastructure, and unemployment. This approach, he argues, offers a departure from the cyclical conflicts that have plagued the region for decades.

Trump's plan, however, has been met with criticism, notably from Hamas, the governing authority in Gaza, which labeled it a recipe for regional instability.

The visit by Netanyahu marked the first reception of a foreign leader at the White House since Trump's return to office and occurred amidst Israel's ongoing recovery from the October 2024 Hamas attack.
