Romania has announced its intention to establish a regional training center for F-16 fighter jet pilots, welcoming personnel from NATO allies and other partners, including Ukraine. This initiative was confirmed during a meeting of the Supreme Council of National Defense (CSAT) chaired by President Klaus Iohannis.
The training hub, developed in collaboration with allied nations and the aircraft manufacturer, will initially train Romanian F-16 pilots before opening its doors to pilots from NATO and partner countries, notably Ukraine. This move aims to solidify Romania's position as a regional leader in F-16 pilot training, bolstering cohesion and strengthening the Euro-Atlantic defense posture.
This announcement follows Romania's increased defense spending in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The country, a NATO member since 2004 and an EU member since 2007, shares a substantial border with Ukraine. The CSAT did not specify the location or opening date of the training facility.

Romania's commitment to modernizing its air force was further underscored in April with the CSAT's approval to acquire advanced F-35 fighter jets. Since the onset of the conflict in Ukraine, NATO has amplified its presence in Eastern Europe, deploying additional multinational battlegroups to Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Slovakia.
Romania has played a vital role in the alliance during the ongoing conflict, including hosting a NATO foreign ministers meeting in November.
