Granholm Admits to Inaccurate Stock Testimony, Divests Holdings

Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm has acknowledged providing inaccurate testimony to Congress regarding her stock ownership. In a letter to the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, she admitted to owning shares in six companies, contradicting her previous sworn statement that she held no individual stocks. Granholm attributed the discrepancy to a misunderstanding, claiming she intended to convey that she possessed no stocks posing a conflict of interest. To rectify the situation, she divested her remaining holdings on May 18, 2023.

The Secretary's letter, obtained by Fox News Digital, explains that while she divested from several stocks in 2021 following ethical guidelines, she retained some assets deemed non-conflicting by government officials. She expressed regret for the error and emphasized her commitment to maintaining high ethical standards. Granholm plans to disclose the specific companies involved in her upcoming Annual Public Financial Disclosure Report in mid-June.

Furthermore, Granholm revealed that her husband, Daniel Mulhern, held shares in Ford Motor Company worth $2,457.89, which were subsequently sold on May 15, 2023. She acknowledged an oversight in not disclosing these shares in previous financial reports, mistakenly believing they had been divested in early 2021 along with holdings in their retirement accounts. Granholm reiterated her dedication to transparency and ethical conduct as a public servant.

Senator John Barrasso (R-WY), Ranking Member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, criticized Granholm's actions, characterizing her statement to the committee as a lie and expressing concern over a pattern of ethical and disclosure violations. Granholm confirmed that all transactions will be detailed in a Public Financial Disclosure Periodic Transaction Report in July.

An Energy Department spokesperson, in a statement to Fox News Digital, affirmed Granholm's commitment to the highest ethical standards and emphasized her swift action to rectify the situation upon realizing her error. The spokesperson highlighted the Secretary's dedication to transparency and prioritizing the interests of the American public.
