Red Wings Bring Hometown Hero DeBrincat Back to Michigan

Michigan native and two-time 41-goal scorer Alex DeBrincat is returning to his home state after the Detroit Red Wings acquired him from the Ottawa Senators in a trade involving players and draft picks. The 25-year-old DeBrincat, hailing from Farmington Hills, has also inked a four-year contract extension with the Red Wings, averaging approximately $7.8 million per year.

To secure DeBrincat, the Red Wings sent forward Dominik Kubalik, defensive prospect Donovan Sebrango, a conditional first-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, and a fourth-round pick in the same draft to the Senators.

DeBrincat brings a wealth of experience and scoring prowess to the Red Wings, having amassed 187 goals, 186 assists, and 373 points in 450 NHL games with the Senators and the Chicago Blackhawks, who drafted him 39th overall in 2016. During his most recent season with Ottawa, DeBrincat was a key contributor, ranking among the team leaders with 27 goals, 39 assists, and 66 points. He also added 11 power-play goals and six game-winning goals.

DeBrincat's journey began with five seasons in Chicago before being traded to the Senators. Now, he joins a Red Wings team looking to bolster its offensive firepower.

In return, the Senators receive Kubalik, a 27-year-old forward who played nearly the entire 2022-23 season with Detroit, achieving career-highs in assists (25) and scoring 20 goals. They also acquire Sebrango, a 21-year-old Ottawa native who spent the last season between the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins and the ECHL's Toledo Walleye. Sebrango showcased his leadership as an alternate captain for Team Canada during their gold medal run at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship.
