Nation Honors Former President Jimmy Carter with National Day of Mourning

In remembrance of former President Jimmy Carter, President Biden has declared January 9th a National Day of Mourning, closing federal government departments and agencies. This tribute follows President Carter's passing and precedes his funeral services, which will include lying in state at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda and a subsequent funeral at Washington National Cathedral. President Biden's proclamation also directs that all American flags be flown at half-staff for 30 days.

President Carter's legacy extends from his Georgia roots on a peanut farm to his service in the U.S. Navy and his political career as a state senator, Georgia's governor, and ultimately, the 39th President of the United States. His presidency saw the establishment of the Department of Education and the Department of Energy, along with significant contributions to conservation and nuclear nonproliferation.

Beyond his time in office, Carter remained a prominent figure, notably through his work with Habitat for Humanity alongside his wife, Rosalynn, who was his partner for over 77 years. The White House released a statement praising Carter's unwavering faith in the American people and his global efforts to promote peace, combat disease, address homelessness, and champion human rights, freedom, and democracy.
