Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Pope Francis is reportedly in stable condition and responding well to treatment for pneumonia and a respiratory infection, according to updates from his medical team at Gemelli Hospital in Rome. While his condition is not considered life-threatening, the 88-year-old pontiff is anticipated to stay hospitalized for the remainder of the week.

Dr. Sergio Alfieri, along with the Pope's personal physician, Dr. Luigi Carbone, addressed reporters on Friday, marking the Pope's first week in the hospital. They confirmed that the Pope is receiving standard treatment for his condition, which includes supplemental oxygen and a robust drug regimen to combat the infection. The medical team clarified that the infection, a combination of bacterial and viral agents, is localized to the respiratory tract and has not spread to the bloodstream, alleviating concerns about sepsis.
