A New York City resident has been charged with second-degree murder as a hate crime after allegedly stabbing his roommate 47 times in what District Attorney Alvin Bragg has labeled a racially motivated attack. The victim, Maximito Polanco-Parra, was targeted due to his Hispanic heritage, according to the DA's office.
The accused, 34-year-old Hosameldin Ismail, shared an apartment with Polanco-Parra and others in the Inwood neighborhood. On May 30, 2023, Ismail allegedly ambushed Polanco-Parra shortly after he returned to the residence, inflicting 47 stab wounds to his head, neck, and chest. Police apprehended Ismail outside the building, reportedly recovering multiple kitchen knives. Polanco-Parra was pronounced dead at the scene.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced the indictment of Ismail on two counts of second-degree murder as a hate crime and one count of second-degree murder. Bragg expressed his condolences to Polanco-Parra's family and friends, emphasizing the racially motivated nature of the crime.

The NYPD swiftly apprehended the suspect and recovered the alleged murder weapons. The District Attorney’s office is committed to prosecuting this case to the fullest extent of the law.
