Northwestern Football Hazing Allegations: Coach Fitzgerald Suspended

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

Serious allegations of hazing within the Northwestern University football program have surfaced, leading to a two-week suspension for head coach Pat Fitzgerald. A former player detailed disturbing incidents to The Daily Northwestern, describing alleged sexual misconduct and other harmful behaviors.

The former player recounted an alleged practice called "running," where primarily freshman players would be subjected to simulated sexual assault by upperclassmen wearing masks. He claimed this practice was often triggered by a hand signal from Fitzgerald himself, although the coach denies any knowledge of the hazing activities.

The player described a pervasive culture of fear and silence surrounding the alleged hazing, stating that teammates felt compelled to participate because they believed Fitzgerald was aware and condoned the behavior. He characterized the acts as "sexual abuse" disguised as team bonding.

Further allegations include forced nudity and humiliating physical acts, as well as a "Gatorade shake challenge" that reportedly always resulted in vomiting. Fitzgerald expressed disappointment upon learning of the allegations and emphasized the program's commitment to high standards.

Northwestern Athletics affirmed its dedication to a safe environment for all students, coaches, and staff, and expressed gratitude to those who came forward. The university plans to implement mandatory annual anti-hazing training and emphasize reporting procedures.
