NCAA Swimmer Challenges Transgender Athlete Policies, Demands Apology

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Former North Carolina State University swimming star Kylee Alons has openly criticized NCAA policies that permit biological males to compete in women's sports. Alons, one of the most decorated swimmers in NC State history, shared her experience of feeling "powerless" when competing against and sharing locker room facilities with a biological male.

Following a meeting with House lawmakers who passed the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, Alons expressed her frustration with the NCAA's lack of accountability. The act aims to prohibit biological males from participating in women's sports. Alons felt the NCAA's decision disregarded the concerns of female athletes.

A 31-time All-American, two-time NCAA National Champion, and five-time ACC Champion, Alons competed against transgender athlete Lia Thomas in 2022. She described feeling "violated" and "unsafe" changing in the locker room with Thomas, resorting to using a utility closet instead.

Alons emphasized the years of dedication and sacrifice she invested in her swimming career, including foregoing social events and vacations. Reaching the highest level of collegiate swimming was a significant achievement, and she described the intense preparation involved, including five-plus hours of daily training.

However, the 2022 NCAA championships brought an additional layer of stress and discomfort. The prospect of a biological male entering the locker room while she was changing created an unsettling environment.

Alons believes the NCAA's current policies contradict the spirit of Title IX and diminish the progress made in women's sports. Now an ambassador for Young Women for America, Alons advocates for the rights of female athletes and calls for the NCAA to acknowledge and address their concerns.

She is demanding an apology from the NCAA for the violation of privacy and safety experienced by female athletes at the meet and urges a revision of existing policies. Alons believes that female athletes’ voices need to be heard and that the NCAA should not silence them.
