Miami Hurricanes QB Cam Ward Slams CFP Committee Rankings

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

The latest College Football Playoff rankings have sparked controversy, leaving the Miami Hurricanes frustrated and searching for explanations. Ranked 12th, just outside the playoff picture, the Hurricanes find themselves behind 11th-ranked Alabama, a team with three losses compared to Miami's two. This discrepancy has fueled debate, particularly after Miami's recent collapse against Syracuse, where they squandered a 21-point lead.

Quarterback Cam Ward, once considered a Heisman Trophy hopeful, voiced his strong disapproval of the committee's decision. In an interview with the ACC Network, reported by On3 Sports, Ward questioned the committee's evaluation process, suggesting they prioritize the SEC over other conferences. He expressed his belief that Miami faces tougher defensive opponents than SEC teams, making their two losses less indicative of their overall strength. Ward emphasized the team's control over their destiny for much of the season, a control seemingly lost with the recent ranking.

Ward also cast doubt on the committee's diligence in reviewing game footage. He questioned whether they thoroughly analyze the games, highlighting Miami's 10-2 record compared to Alabama's three losses, one of which was a low-scoring defeat against Oklahoma. Ward believes the point differential in these losses should be a significant factor in the rankings.

Before the rankings were revealed, Miami head coach Mario Cristobal urged the committee to focus on the facts. However, the committee chair, Warde Manuel, explained their rationale, citing Alabama's superior record against top 25 teams and teams with winning records as key factors. He acknowledged both teams had experienced disappointing losses but emphasized Miami's two recent defeats in their last three games.
