Tiger Woods Denies Involvement in 2022 Anti-LIV Golf Player Meeting

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

Golfer Tiger Woods has publicly refuted claims of his involvement in a 2022 players' meeting concerning LIV Golf. A court document filed in Palm Beach County suggested Woods delivered a prepared speech at the June 2022 meeting, intended to discourage players from joining the rival golf league. However, Woods denied attending the meeting or even being aware of the document until recently.

The document, reportedly outlining talking points for both PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan and Woods, surfaced on Twitter. It allegedly portrays Monahan characterizing LIV Golf as a threat to players' careers and the sport itself, followed by Woods addressing the players privately. The script purportedly suggests Woods refer to Monahan as "our captain" and praise his leadership in the face of the LIV Golf challenge. It even proposes invoking Woods' son, Charlie's, future in the PGA Tour as part of the appeal to remain with the established organization.

This revelation comes after the controversial merger between the PGA Tour and the Saudi-backed Public Investment Fund, which finances LIV Golf. The move has drawn criticism, with some players labeling Monahan a "hypocrite" given his previous stance against LIV Golf. Woods, who reportedly declined a substantial offer to join LIV Golf, has not publicly commented on his current view of Monahan's leadership. While he was among the initial targets for LIV Golf recruitment, he opted to remain with the PGA Tour. The landscape of professional golf has shifted dramatically since the merger, creating uncertainty about the future of the sport.

Woods has been sidelined from competitive golf due to injuries, most recently withdrawing from the Masters tournament earlier this year. He underwent surgery on his ankle and continues to manage other health issues stemming from a car accident in 2021.
