McCarthy Bolsters Vulnerable Republicans with Campaign Funds Ahead of 2024

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is strategically allocating financial resources to safeguard the House Republican majority in the 2024 elections. This involves directing funds to the campaigns of vulnerable GOP members, including some who have previously challenged his leadership.

Protect The House 2024, a joint fundraising committee established by McCarthy, recently contributed over $31,000 to Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.). This is notable given Boebert's alignment with conservative factions that have sometimes opposed McCarthy. Her narrow victory in the 2022 election, with a margin of less than 1%, underscores her vulnerability. McCarthy's own campaign committee also donated $2,000 to Boebert in June.

Freshman Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.), a Freedom Caucus member, received nearly $36,000 from Protect The House last month. Both Boebert and Luna received close to $100,000 from the McCarthy-affiliated group during the initial fundraising quarter.

Since assuming the speakership, McCarthy has faced criticism for accommodating the right wing of the party, potentially at the expense of more moderate Republicans in competitive districts. However, recent Federal Election Commission filings reveal substantial spending aimed at protecting these lawmakers.

Beyond Boebert, Luna, and House Freedom Caucus Chair Scott Perry (R-Pa.), McCarthy and affiliated groups have supported Republicans facing challenging votes on conservative-backed legislation. This includes several New York Republicans who played a pivotal role in the GOP's House takeover in the previous election cycle.

Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.), a freshman who ousted a prominent House Democrat, received over $110,000 from McCarthy's Protect The House in June, along with a $2,000 donation from McCarthy's campaign.

Reps. Nick LaLota, Anthony D'Esposito, and Brandon Williams have also benefited from significant contributions from McCarthy, Protect The House, and the Congressional Leadership Fund, a GOP leadership-aligned PAC.

Similar efforts have been made to support California Republicans, many of whom represent districts carried by President Biden in 2020. Other McCarthy allies, such as Reps. John James (R-Mich.) and Jen Kiggans (R-Va.), whose districts are considered to lean Republican, received over $100,000 from McCarthy-connected sources last month.

Four-term Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.), a moderate and consistent McCarthy supporter, received over $117,000 this past quarter from the speaker and aligned groups.

A known fundraiser for House Republicans, McCarthy recently announced raising $62.5 million for the 2024 cycle, with $21.7 million in the second quarter alone. He transferred nearly $18 million to the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC).

McCarthy expressed confidence in the Republican majority's accomplishments and the growing momentum of the campaign to maintain and expand their House majority. He cited spending cuts, border security efforts, and investigations into the Biden administration as key drivers of public support.
