Georgia Judge Found Dead in Courtroom from Apparent Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound

A Georgia state judge was discovered deceased within a courtroom on Tuesday, December 17, 2024. Effingham County Sheriff’s deputies reported finding Judge Stephen Yekel, 74, and indicated that his death appears to be a suicide resulting from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident is currently under investigation by both the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, with the latter conducting the autopsy. Authorities believe Judge Yekel died sometime between late Monday night and early Tuesday morning.

Appointed to his position two years prior by Governor Brian Kemp, Judge Yekel recently lost his re-election bid and his term was set to conclude at the end of December 2024. The Effingham County Board of Commissioners expressed their deep sorrow over Judge Yekel's passing, offering condolences to his family and loved ones.
