In a shocking turn of events, a Minnesota man accused of beheading his girlfriend in 2021 has been found not guilty by reason of mental illness. Alexis Saborit, 42, was initially convicted of first-degree premeditated murder in the death of 55-year-old America Thayer. However, Judge Caroline Lennon overturned the conviction based on psychological evaluations indicating Saborit's mental state prevented him from comprehending the wrongfulness of his actions.

The horrific incident unfolded in Shakopee, where Saborit allegedly attacked Thayer with an 8-pound dumbbell inside a vehicle before decapitating her with a machete. Numerous witnesses observed the gruesome attack, some even capturing video footage. The incident occurred as the couple was en route to a court hearing for Saborit on felony charges related to setting fire to their apartment during a prior altercation with police.

Reports indicate that Thayer had expressed her desire to end the relationship, prompting the violent outburst. Saborit discarded the machete after fleeing the scene, but law enforcement later recovered it from a nearby alleyway. He was apprehended shortly thereafter. Prior to the attack, Saborit allegedly confided in a friend about his intention to decapitate Thayer, even laughing about it.
Saborit's defense team consistently argued that he suffered from mental health issues throughout the legal proceedings. Despite an initial first-degree murder conviction, his attorney filed a motion for acquittal based on mental illness following a psychologist's assessment. Judge Lennon ultimately agreed with the assessment, leading to the not guilty verdict. Saborit will remain in custody pending transfer to a suitable facility.
