While Dry January encourages many to abstain from alcohol, the conversation around its health benefits continues. TV host Kelly Ripa shared her personal experience with quitting alcohol in 2017, revealing an unexpected outcome. Contrary to the anticipated weight loss, Ripa gained 12 pounds, attributing it to increased sugar consumption.
Ripa's co-host, Andy Cohen, mentioned his own Dry January weight loss journey, prompting Ripa to share her experience. She expressed surprise at the common misconception of automatic weight loss associated with giving up alcohol.
In a 2020 interview, Ripa explained that she and her friends initially tried a sober month in 2017, and she found she preferred the way she felt without alcohol. Even moderate alcohol consumption previously left her feeling its effects the next morning.
Alcohol's Effects on Weight
Dr. Kathleen Jordan, a women's health and weight management specialist, highlighted the potential health benefits of reducing or eliminating alcohol. These include a lower risk of cancer and potential weight loss. She explained that cutting out alcohol removes the substantial calories present in alcoholic beverages and often reduces late-night snacking.
Improved sleep is another potential benefit, as alcohol can disrupt deep sleep, leading to fatigue and potential weight gain. However, Dr. Jordan cautioned that these benefits aren't universal. Some individuals, particularly light to moderate drinkers, may experience weight gain when they stop drinking alcohol if they replace it with sugary snacks or mocktails.
Dr. Jordan suggests substituting alcohol with various forms of water to combat 'nervous eating' and maintain the habit of drinking. She also emphasized the importance of staying physically active, especially during the winter months, to support the benefits of not drinking and prevent weight gain.
