A federal jury has delivered a guilty verdict against a Kansas woman for the second-degree murder of her husband, an Army specialist stationed at Fort Riley. The tragic incident occurred in February 2024.
Margaret E. Shafe, 31, was found guilty in the shooting death of her husband, Spc. Greg Shafe. He was assigned to Fort Riley, a Kansas military installation. According to his obituary, Spc. Shafe suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head on February 19, 2024, and was pronounced dead the following day. He had been preparing for deployment to Poland with his squadron, a deployment delayed due to his wife's pregnancy complications requiring hospitalization.

The obituary paints a picture of a devoted father. It describes how Spc. Shafe remained by his wife's side during her hospitalization in Kansas City and their newborn daughter's time in the NICU. He cherished his family, and his infant daughter was his pride and joy. Spc. Shafe resided on base with his wife, their one-year-old daughter, and his stepdaughter.

A GoFundMe campaign organized by a family friend, Abby Shelton, aimed to provide support for Spc. Shafe's daughters. The campaign described him as a “beacon of light” and expressed the widespread grief and prayers for his family. According to Shelton, Spc. Shafe’s younger daughter will be adopted by one of his siblings, while his 9-year-old stepdaughter will reside with her biological father.

Margaret Shafe is facing a potential maximum sentence of life imprisonment. The circumstances leading to the shooting and the motive remain undisclosed. The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division, and the Fort Riley Directorate of Emergency Services.
