Anthony Mackie on Captain America: It's Not About 'Representing America'

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

Anthony Mackie, taking on the Captain America mantle in the upcoming "Brave New World," shared his perspective on the iconic character's role. Mackie believes Captain America embodies universal values rather than a specifically American ideal. "It's about a man of his word, someone with honor, dignity, and integrity – trustworthiness and dependability," he explained, emphasizing the character's inherent qualities over national representation.

These remarks emerged during a January 27th press event in Rome for the fourth Captain America film. Hotel De La Ville confirmed hosting Disney and the film's promotional activities, including interviews and photocalls.

Interestingly, while Marvel's Italian account promoted the film using Mackie's comments, they omitted his statement about Captain America not representing America.

Mackie, known for his roles in previous Marvel films like "Avengers: Infinity War" and earlier Captain America installments, transitions from his role as Falcon, a close ally of the original Captain America, Steve Rogers. He now assumes the shield and costume, stepping into this significant role.

Mackie also highlighted the importance of representation for diverse audiences. He stated that a Black Captain America holds as much significance for Black children as it does for White children, drawing a parallel to his own childhood connection with a green-skinned hero. The actor emphasized the importance of having role models who embody positive human qualities, regardless of race.
