In the wake of a tragic attack in New Orleans, the 2025 Sugar Bowl between Notre Dame and Georgia has been rescheduled. Originally slated for Wednesday evening, the game will now kick off at 4 p.m. ET on Thursday. Allstate Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley expressed condolences to the victims and their families, emphasizing the prioritization of public safety in the decision to postpone. He thanked everyone involved for their cooperation in adjusting to the new schedule, ensuring the Sugar Bowl remains a safe and enjoyable event. Rich Clark, executive director of the College Football Playoff, echoed these sentiments, expressing devastation over the attack and gratitude for the collaborative efforts to ensure a safe environment. The decision to postpone has sparked debate, with some supporting the move while others argue it concedes to the attacker's aims.
The Superdome, located near the attack site, was reportedly placed on lockdown for security sweeps. Both participating teams, who arrived in New Orleans on Sunday and are staying in hotels near the scene, have reportedly implemented shelter-in-place protocols. Several airlines, including Delta, Southwest, and United, have issued travel advisories for New Orleans, anticipating potential delays due to the ongoing investigation. Delta's advisory extends until January 3rd, with rebooked flights rescheduled for January 6th.
The FBI, leading the investigation, has indicated that the prime suspect, Shamsud Din Jabbar, may not have acted alone. Authorities have cautioned about potential ongoing threats. The FBI is investigating Jabbar's potential links to terrorist groups after an ISIS flag was discovered in his truck. Weapons and a possible improvised explosive device (IED) were found in the vehicle, with additional potential IEDs located in the French Quarter.
