Months after a controversial Olympic match, Italian boxer Angela Carini has reclaimed her title. Carini secured her eighth Italian women's title, describing the victory as a personal "revenge" following her Olympic experience. In Paris, Carini withdrew from her bout against Algerian boxer Imane Khelif after absorbing several powerful blows to the head. Khelif's participation in the women's competition sparked significant debate due to prior failures in gender eligibility tests for other international boxing events. Khelif had been disqualified from the 2023 IBA World Championships after IBA President Umar Kremlev revealed the boxer possessed "XY chromosomes," typically associated with males.

The 46-second bout ended with Carini's withdrawal, a decision she attributed to the intensity of Khelif's punches. While stating she did not give up, Carini explained that one punch was particularly painful, leading her to stop the fight. Carini's initial goal at the Olympics was to win a medal in honor of her deceased father. Khelif ultimately won gold in Paris, but the victory was overshadowed by the ongoing gender eligibility controversy, which also involved Taiwanese gold medalist Lin Yu-ting. The International Olympics Committee (IOC) defended both athletes' inclusion in the women's events. Following the Olympics, Khelif initiated legal action against critics, including Elon Musk and J.K. Rowling, citing "aggravated cyber harassment." A separate lawsuit was threatened against a French journalist who published a report alleging Khelif had testicles.

Carini expressed regret over the controversy surrounding her withdrawal and apologized to Khelif, explaining that her anger stemmed from her Olympic aspirations being dashed. Despite the difficult experience, Carini's recent victory marks a significant personal and professional triumph.
