Scott Sauerbeck, a left-handed pitcher who spent parts of seven seasons in Major League Baseball, passed away on Wednesday in Florida at the age of 53. The cause of death was reported as a heart attack.
Sauerbeck made his MLB debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1999 and played for the team until 2003. He holds the Pirates' single-season record for appearances by a left-handed pitcher, set in 2002 with 78 games. The Pirates organization expressed their condolences on social media, remembering Sauerbeck's contributions to the team.

During the 2003 season, Sauerbeck was traded to the Boston Red Sox and later signed with the Cleveland Indians. An injury prevented him from playing in 2004. He had a brief stint with the Oakland Athletics in 2006, marking his final appearances in the major leagues. He later signed a minor league contract with the Cincinnati Reds organization in 2008.

Over his MLB career, Sauerbeck compiled a 3.82 ERA and a 20-17 win-loss record.
