Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil has called upon consumers to resist inflated grocery prices by refusing to purchase overpriced items. In a widely circulated video, he advised shoppers in Salvador and elsewhere to refrain from buying products they deem too expensive, suggesting that this collective action could force sellers to lower prices to avoid spoilage.

While expressing concern about rising food costs, President Lula expressed optimism about the overall economic outlook during a radio interview. He anticipates a slowdown in price increases and believes the Brazilian economy is currently performing well. He acknowledged the real's weakness against the dollar but expects an eventual adjustment.

Earlier this year, Finance Minister Fernando Haddad predicted a decline in food prices throughout 2025 due to robust agricultural output. He explained that prices remain elevated until production catches up and corrects market imbalances. Haddad also projected a 2.5% economic growth rate for Brazil in 2025, slightly lower than the estimated 3.5% growth in the preceding year. He linked this projection to efforts to curb inflation.
