Ninety-two-year-old Ivan Pedley isn't just playing ping pong; he's mastering it. Twice a week, this retired toolmaker and grandfather of three heads to the Great Wyrley Table Tennis Club in Staffordshire, England, to engage in his lifelong passion. Pedley first picked up a paddle at the age of 14, and an incredible 78 years later, he's still going strong, competing against players decades younger.

Pedley, a resident of Walsall, West Midlands, plays approximately 14 games each week. He attributes his longevity in the sport to technique, noting that while younger competitors may be faster, skillful play is the key to success. He believes ping pong has been instrumental in maintaining his fitness and health, calling it "the best thing I've ever done." He proudly states he doesn't know of anyone his age still actively playing.

Pedley's passion for the sport isn't limited to competition. He enjoys the camaraderie and challenge, aiming to play against everyone at the club. While acknowledging a slight slowing down over the years, he emphasizes the importance of staying active, declaring, "Sitting on your backside is no help to anyone." He plans to continue playing as long as his health allows.

His dedication to ping pong was rekindled in his 60s during a vacation with a friend. This rediscovery led him back to the sport he loved, complementing his other activities like bowling, swimming, and judo, in which he holds a brown belt. Pedley believes the high skill level of his current opponents has elevated his own game, even jokingly admitting to occasionally letting them win to avoid discouragement. He spends up to three hours at the club each Tuesday and Friday, driven by a desire to stay active and healthy.

Pedley encourages others to join clubs and experience the benefits of regular activity. He's proud of his achievements in amateur competitions and the certificates he's earned. Club Secretary Tony Reeds commends Pedley's dedication, noting his willingness to play anyone and his commitment to the sport. Reeds shares Pedley's advice to others: "If you want to keep fit, this is the way to do it."
