SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk is poised to take a prominent role in the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), potentially securing office space within the White House complex. Reports suggest Musk may occupy an office in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, adjacent to the West Wing. While discussions regarding Musk's access to President-elect Trump are ongoing, the specifics are yet to be finalized. Typically, special passes are required for unrestricted access to the West Wing.
Partnering with tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, Musk will co-lead DOGE, focusing on identifying and eliminating government waste and streamlining operations. It remains unclear whether Ramaswamy will also be allocated White House office space. DOGE, functioning as a blue-ribbon committee rather than a formal government entity, is expected to propose executive orders to the Trump administration and collaborate with the Office of Management and Budget to implement reforms.
With a target of cutting $2 trillion from the federal budget by reducing spending, programs, and the federal workforce, DOGE has ambitious goals. However, Musk recently acknowledged that a $1 trillion reduction might be more realistic. During a tech trade show in Las Vegas, he expressed optimism for achieving the $2 trillion goal but conceded that aiming high provides a buffer for potential shortfalls.
DOGE's team, currently numbering around 50 and expected to grow to 100 by the inauguration, has commenced interviews with staff from various government agencies, including Treasury, IRS, Veterans Affairs, Homeland Security, and Health and Human Services. Operating from SpaceX's Washington, D.C. offices, the team is actively preparing for its task. Musk, a significant donor to Trump's 2024 campaign, is reportedly still deliberating on whether to assume the DOGE leadership role as a special government employee, which would necessitate financial disclosures. Declining this status could impose certain limitations, such as mandatory public meetings and document transparency.
Musk and other prominent figures in the tech industry and venture capital are scheduled to convene in Washington, D.C. for a dinner to discuss global innovation in artificial intelligence and entrepreneurship with incoming Trump administration officials. This event, sponsored by Outside the Box Ventures, aims to foster public-private collaboration in leveraging technology for the nation's future.
