Azerbaijan Airlines Crash Likely Caused by Russian Missile, Sources Claim

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

An Azerbaijan Airlines flight tragically crashed in Kazakhstan on Christmas Day, resulting in 38 fatalities. Initial reports indicate a potential downing by a Russian air defense system, according to sources close to the investigation cited by Reuters. One source suggests a Russian Pantsir-S system may have been involved, coupled with electronic warfare interference impacting the aircraft's communication systems as it approached Grozny. While unintentional, the source conveyed Azerbaijan's anticipation of Russia acknowledging responsibility. Both Russian and Kazakh officials have remained reserved in their comments following the incident near Aktau.

This incident, claiming 38 lives, occurred on Christmas Day. A Ukrainian national security official also attributed the crash to Russian air defense fire. The Embraer 190, carrying 62 passengers and 5 crew members, veered significantly off course from Azerbaijan to Russia, crashing on the opposite side of the Caspian Sea. Twenty-nine individuals survived. Footage depicts the aircraft's rapid descent and subsequent fiery impact on the shoreline.

The reason for the plane's deviation remains unclear, but the crash followed drone strikes in southern Russia. Such drone activity has previously caused airport closures in the region, and the closest Russian airport along the flight path was indeed closed that Wednesday morning.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed an ongoing investigation, cautioning against premature conclusions. Kazakhstan's parliamentary Speaker, Maulen Ashimbayev, echoed this sentiment, deeming allegations of air defense involvement as baseless and inappropriate. Officials from both Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan have refrained from commenting on the cause, deferring to the ongoing investigations.

Andriy Kovalenko, a Ukrainian national security official, publicly attributed the crash to a Russian air defense system, suggesting a potential cover-up. Osprey Flight Solutions, an aviation security firm, also posited the likelihood of the plane being shot down by a Russian military air defense system, citing video evidence and the regional airspace security context. Russia's aviation authority, however, suggested a bird strike as a possible cause.
