Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

A substantial 6.5 magnitude earthquake originating in the Pacific Ocean, just off El Salvador's coast, reverberated across a large swathe of Central America on Tuesday, impacting regions from Nicaragua to Guatemala. The tremor prompted residents in several cities to evacuate buildings and seek safety in the streets.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake's epicenter was located approximately 27 miles south of Intipuca, El Salvador, at a depth of 43 miles. This point lies outside the Gulf of Fonseca, a body of water shared by Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua.

While residents of El Salvador's capital rushed outdoors as the ground shook beneath them, initial reports indicated no immediate damage or injuries. A radio station's call-in segment with residents from across the country similarly yielded no immediate reports of casualties.

Within El Salvador's Legislative Assembly, lawmakers briefly evacuated their desks before returning shortly after to continue their session.

El Salvador's Environment Ministry confirmed there was no tsunami threat following the earthquake.

The earthquake was also significantly felt in Nicaragua's capital and along its Pacific coastline. Nicaraguan Vice President and first lady Rosario Murillo reported no immediate victims in the country.
