In response to escalating antisemitic incidents and the ongoing hostage crisis in Gaza, Israeli UFC fighter Natan Levy has partnered with the organization StandStrong to provide self-defense training to the Jewish community. Marking the somber 500th day of Hamas' captivity of hostages, Levy conducted a seminar in New York, emphasizing the importance of community empowerment during these challenging times.
Levy shared his experience of training former Hamas hostage Andre Kozlov, calling it a privilege. He underscored his desire for the safe return of all hostages and stressed the importance of Jews recognizing their own strength and resilience in the face of adversity. He aims to dispel the notion of victimhood, conveying a message of empowerment and resistance.
While the seminars primarily target the Jewish community, Levy welcomes anyone who has experienced bullying or feels threatened. During a February 17th session at Renzo Gracie Rockland gym, participants of all ages learned practical self-defense techniques and had common errors corrected by the skilled fighter.
StandStrong, established in 2020, addresses the concerning trend of Jewish students concealing their identity due to fear. The organization's mission is to equip individuals with self-defense skills, fostering confidence and pride in their heritage. Founder Ted Schwartz aims to create a united front against hate and terror, encompassing both Jewish and non-Jewish individuals.
The collaboration between Levy and StandStrong originated organically through social media, with Levy immediately connecting with the organization's mission. StandStrong Executive Director Matt Travers praised Levy's dedication to empowering the community, highlighting the positive impact of a high-profile athlete advocating for strength and self-defense. Travers emphasized the importance of representing Jewish strength and resilience within the martial arts world.
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) reported a record number of antisemitic incidents between October 7, 2023, and September 24, 2024, the highest since their tracking began in 1979. The alarming statistics underscore the urgent need for initiatives like Levy's and StandStrong's, which focus on empowering individuals and communities to defend themselves against hate and violence.
