Three Children Receive Life-Changing Bionic Arms for Christmas

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

This holiday season, three children received an extraordinary gift: bionic arms. Eight-year-olds Ettie Baker and Zoey Hampton-Pigeon, along with 11-year-old Finn Jarvis, are now the proud owners of these advanced prosthetics, thanks to the Big Hero 3 campaign.

Founded by Sarah Lockey, a mother whose daughter also experienced limb differences, the campaign helps families raise funds for bionic arms. Ettie's mother, Alyse, shared that her daughter was overjoyed upon learning about her Christmas gift. While Ettie has always embraced her uniqueness, her awareness of being different has grown, making the Hero Arm a truly transformative present. The arm will enable her to engage in activities like bike riding, tying her shoes, and even handstands, granting her newfound independence and confidence.

The Open Bionics Foundation, along with several other organizations and an anonymous donor, contributed over $50,000 to make these gifts possible. The Hero Arm, designed for individuals with below-elbow limb differences, is recognized as the world's most affordable advanced multi-grip prosthetic.

Zoey's father, Thomas, recounted his daughter's excitement, describing her as "jumping up and down squealing" when she learned about the arm. Discovering Zoey's limb difference during a pregnancy scan was a challenging experience for the family. Despite facing limitations with everyday tasks, Zoey remains a cheerful, confident, and active child who participates in gymnastics, swimming, and trampolining. The bionic arm will significantly enhance her independence.

Sarah Lockey's inspiration for the campaign stemmed from her daughter's experience with meningitis, which led to limb loss at a young age. Lockey expressed her commitment to helping other families facing similar challenges. The collaborative fundraising efforts of the three families involved made a significant impact, and Lockey emphasized the joy of witnessing these children receive such a transformative gift.

Finn, the third recipient, is considered the heart of his family. Born without a hand due to a car accident his mother experienced during pregnancy, Finn is described as a kind, courageous, and intelligent boy. His father, Ben, believes the bionic arm will unlock endless possibilities for Finn's future.
