Drone Strike in Syria Targets ISIS-Linked Militant, Casualties Reported

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

A suspected U.S.-led coalition drone strike in northern Syria resulted in the death of an individual with alleged ties to the Islamic State and injured a bystander on Friday. The Syrian Civil Defense, known as the White Helmets, reported that the deceased was riding a motorcycle at the time of the attack. An additional individual, a passerby, sustained injuries in the incident.

Rami Abdurrahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, confirmed that the targeted individual was a militant associated with ISIS. The strike reportedly took place on the road connecting al-Bab and Bazaa. The U.S.-led coalition has a history of targeting militants affiliated with al-Qaida and ISIS in the region.

Separately, a shooting inside a Lebanese mosque resulted in one fatality and five injuries, according to a security official.

In May, the U.S. military initiated an investigation into reports of a civilian casualty during an earlier strike in northwest Syria, which aimed to eliminate a high-ranking al-Qaida leader.

Currently, approximately 900 U.S. troops and an undisclosed number of contractors are stationed in Syria, collaborating with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Their mission is to prevent the resurgence of ISIS, which gained control of significant territories across Iraq and Syria in 2014.

Despite ISIS's territorial defeat in Syria in March 2019, the group's sleeper cells continue to launch attacks, primarily targeting Syrian government forces, SDF members, and local officials.

In a separate incident, a road accident between Homs and Palmyra claimed the lives of 16 individuals, including women and children, as reported by state news agency SANA.
