Newly released bodycam video offers a glimpse into the beach conditions at Destin, Florida, where former NFL quarterback Ryan Mallett tragically drowned on Tuesday. The footage, shared by the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, shows a deputy rushing towards the scene as first responders worked to rescue Mallett from the water.

Contrary to some speculation, authorities have stated that there were no riptides present at the time of the incident. Sheriff Eric Adams confirmed in a video statement that the beach was under a yellow flag, advising swimmers to exercise caution, but there were no red flags indicating hazardous conditions. He described the event as a "tragic accident" unrelated to the surf, tides, or currents.

According to the sheriff's office, Mallett was approximately 150 feet offshore, seemingly attempting to reach a sandbar, when he began struggling. Emergency services were called to the scene near Gulf Shores Drive around 2:15 p.m., but despite their efforts, Mallett was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

While the conditions on Tuesday were deemed safe for swimming, the area has experienced a surge in water-related incidents in recent weeks. Reports indicate seven fatalities at nearby Panama City Beach this year, all occurring in June, making it the deadliest beach in the U.S. in 2023, according to National Weather Service data. Destin Beach Safety reported no drownings between June 14 and June 25, but they did conduct 48 rescues during that period, coinciding with over 200,000 beach visitors.
