Syrian Refugee Charged with Attempted Murder in French Playground Stabbing

Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

A 31-year-old Syrian refugee with Swedish residency has been formally charged with attempted murder following a horrific attack at a playground in Annecy, France. The suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed, allegedly stabbed four young children and two adults on Thursday. He is also facing charges of armed resistance and remains in custody, refusing to cooperate with investigators.

While the motive is still unclear, authorities have stated that there is currently no evidence suggesting terrorism played a role. A psychiatric evaluation deemed the suspect fit to stand trial. Prosecutor Line Bonnet-Mathis revealed that the suspect has a three-year-old daughter residing in Sweden.

The young victims, estimated to be around three or four years old, included two French cousins, a British girl, and a Dutch girl. Witnesses reported hearing the suspect mention his wife, daughter, and Jesus Christ during the attack. Thankfully, all victims are now in stable condition, with doctors expressing optimism about the recovery of the two French cousins who sustained the most severe injuries.

In addition to the children, a Portuguese man and another adult were injured while attempting to intervene. The Portuguese man is reportedly recovering well, and the other adult has been discharged after receiving treatment for an elbow injury. A 24-year-old Catholic pilgrim named Henri is being hailed as a hero for using his backpack to confront and deter the attacker. Henri's father recounted the suspect's erratic behavior, describing him as incoherent and speaking in multiple languages while invoking his family and deities.

French authorities have confirmed that the suspect had sought asylum in France but was rejected last week because he already held refugee status in Sweden.
