Oscar Nominee Karla Sofía Gascón Addresses Backlash Over Past Social Media Posts

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

Karla Sofía Gascón, the first openly transgender nominee for Best Actress, has responded to criticism surrounding controversial social media posts from her past. Gascón, recognized for her role in "Emilia Pérez," faced scrutiny after several old tweets resurfaced, containing remarks on various topics, including religion and the death of George Floyd.

In an emotional interview with CNN en Español, conducted independently of the film's production and distribution (Netflix), Gascón expressed remorse. "I offer my sincerest apologies to anyone offended by my past, present, or future expressions," she stated, while also affirming her intention to remain a nominee. "I cannot relinquish this nomination. My performance is being acknowledged, and I haven't committed any crime or caused harm. I am not racist, nor am I anything those trying to tarnish my reputation claim me to be."

Gascón maintained her innocence, asserting, "I believe I’ve been judged, condemned, and vilified without a fair hearing or opportunity to defend myself." She clarified her comments on George Floyd, explaining that she aimed to highlight the perceived hypocrisy surrounding his posthumous recognition. "He faced immense hardship without support, and suddenly he becomes a symbol, universally loved," she elaborated.

Gascón further emphasized, "For anyone to think I’ve insulted someone based on their skin color is unacceptable. I wouldn't tolerate such behavior from anyone." Fox News Digital previously contacted Gascón's management for comment but did not receive an immediate response.
