Ocasio-Cortez Links Deportations to Economic Consequences, Disputes Trump's Latino Support Narrative

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recently voiced her concerns regarding the economic repercussions of deportations, particularly in the agricultural and construction sectors, and the impact on in-home care for families. Speaking on the "Latino USA" podcast, she cautioned against potential price increases for goods and services if the immigrant workforce diminishes. She argued that immigrants, including undocumented individuals, have significantly contributed to American prosperity, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ocasio-Cortez also challenged the narrative surrounding former President Trump's increased support among Latino voters in the 2024 election. While acknowledging Trump's gains, she attributed them to what she described as "sophisticated" campaign tactics that created divisions within the Latino community, particularly between established residents and more recent arrivals and asylum seekers, and the spread of "right-wing misinformation." She expressed concern over the influence of social media algorithms controlled by billionaires, alleging they were used to spread misinformation and manipulate political discourse.

She further criticized the argument that the Trump administration primarily targeted violent criminals for deportation, asserting that legal pathways for immigration were being closed off. Ocasio-Cortez also expressed disappointment over what she perceived as members of the Hispanic community succumbing to misinformation, particularly on social media platforms.
