Congressional Caucus Targets Government Waste with 'DOGE Days'

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

Following a closed-door meeting, the Congressional DOGE Caucus has outlined its strategy to tackle government inefficiency. The caucus, co-chaired by Representatives Aaron Bean and Pete Sessions, is dividing its members into eight working groups focusing on key areas like retirement programs, social safety nets, emergency funding, energy permits, homeland security, defense and veterans affairs, workforce management, and general government operations.

The caucus aims to introduce legislation supporting the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an initiative spearheaded by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy. Representatives Bean and Sessions have challenged their colleagues to introduce at least one bill related to government efficiency during the current congressional session. The group envisions coordinated legislative efforts, including designated “DOGE Days,” where numerous bills addressing government waste will be introduced and debated.

During the meeting, various representatives shared their specific proposals for cutting government spending. Rep. Jay Obernolte advocated for a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution, while Rep. Jeff Van Drew suggested restricting child tax credit eligibility for undocumented immigrants. Senator Joni Ernst, leading the DOGE effort in the Senate, encouraged House members to collaborate with their Senate counterparts on bipartisan legislation. The caucus is also working to solidify President-elect Trump's cost-cutting initiatives through legislative action.

An email tip line established by the caucus has already received a substantial volume of feedback from the public, demonstrating widespread interest in government efficiency and cost reduction. This public engagement underscores the importance of the caucus’s mission and its potential impact on federal spending.
